Local etiquette
Do
- Remove shoes and hats at temples, and cover shoulders and knees.
- Book reserved seats on the Kandy–Ella train well ahead — they sell out.
- Carry small rupee notes for tuk-tuks and roadside stalls.
Avoid
- Don't turn your back on a Buddha statue for a photo, or pose alongside one — it is an offence.
- Don't display Buddha tattoos or imagery on clothing; travellers have been refused entry over it.
- Don't drink tap water.
Common scams and tourist traps
- “The temple is closed — let me show you another” outside Kandy's Temple of the Tooth.
- Tuk-tuks without meters quoting several times the fare; PickMe meters the trip.
- Gem and spice-garden “tours” that pay the driver commission.
